It’s been a year since we planted our little vineyard, and the second growing season has gotten underway. The buds have broken, and we already have vines poking out of the grow tubes.

Since this spring (and this past winter) has been pretty wet, we haven’t had to water the vineyard at all. We are at the point where we will need to turn the irrigation back on, though.
Along with the wetness, we’ve had a ton of snails creeping into the vineyard. It turns out that they are bad for the vines (who knew?), so we’ve had to have CRV come in and remove them. We expect close to a full canopy by the end of summer, so deer abatement will be the primary task this season.
Our new vineyard dog, Syrah, has started to follow me out into the vines to sniff around for stuff. She stepped on a lot of the ‘sticker’ weeds that I’ve had to pull out of my boots, so she is a little tentative about going deep into the vines. Hopefully with enough grass growing between the vines, we’ll have fewer weeds in the coming years.
