The First Steps…

Myrna and Jay Couch moved to San Martin in December of 2017 to partially get out of the Silicon Valley  rat race and find more room for their two precocious little boys (Derek and Brandon) to run and grow.  The beautiful 10.3 acre property sits overlooking San Martin, Gilroy, and Morgan Hill, and boasts picturesque sunsets, a seasonal creek, and a front yard that was already cleared and irrigated for a vineyard.  It checked so many boxes that the couple decided to promptly sell their home in Willow Glen (San Jose) and move on out to the country.

One of the first things that they noticed is that there was a lot more wildlife to deal with.  In the Rancho Robles community, this came in the form of deer, skunks, turkeys, ground squirrels, wild boars, cows, and their own personal daily aerial show: a family of six hawks that soar through the canyon in the backyard.  This is where the first part of our winery’s name comes from.

The Couch Family fell in love with their new home and initiated the design and build out of a vineyard in the front yard so that they could pursue one of their favorite passions:  wine.   The vineyard contains 487 vines composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc.  It is being built and maintained by Coastal Range Vineyard (http://coastalrangevineyards.com).

Digging holes for the end posts and line posts was challenging for the crew.  They unearthed LARGE volcanic rocks that are all over the place in our soil.  Some of them were close to 60 lbs.

487 vines yield approximately two full barrels of what the Couch’s hope will be a superb cabernet blend.
